A
word from the Author...
As Chris Bath, presenter of the television series, You've got
the Job,
says in an interview in this book, looking for a job can be a
hair-raising experience for the jobseeker. And she acknowledges it can
also be
a remarkably nerve-wracking experience for employers too.
So much is at stake for both parties. After all, our economy, our
society, our
forms of governance, our families and our own lives as individuals,
revolve
around employment and the generation of income.
A report by the Productivity Commission on non-traditional work (The
Role of
Non-Traditional Work in the Australian Labour Market), says
one-in-four
Australian households - from every level of society - relies on income
from
non-traditional sources, that is casual work or forms of
self-employment. Other
reports point to "job churn": Those who do have jobs change them
regularly and an
estimated one-in-five Australians will experience some form of
unemployment
each year.
So, whatever way you want to look at it, we live in a dynamic labour
market!
Inspirations
I first became interested in the nature and future of work some 25
years ago
when I started to get some small idea of the magnitude of the change
that was
coming; a paradigm change that I think has not yet passed its peak.
Since then, my own job history has included periods of stable
employment, gaps
while I looked for just about anything, and in more recent times the
bringing
in of income via the portfolio model I cover late in this book.
All my work these days involves, in some way or another, 'working with
work and
people looking for work', and in that I consider myself very fortunate.
It is
what I love doing and I believe loving one's work is vital for mental,
physical
and spiritual health!
People might say I'm lucky to be doing that, but it’s not
been a matter of luck
so much as hard work to get here, believe me! And if I can get to do
work I
love, anyone can.
Each of the people whose stories are included in some depth in this
book would
probably say the same. Follow the stories of Dr John Tickell, for
example, or
Sarina Russo, or even our Federal Minister for Workplace Relations,
Kevin
Andrews, and you will see people who are passionate about what they do
and what
they believe in - and who risk following that 'thread' wherever it
takes them
in their lives.
Results
This book has not been written as another definitive 'how to'
book,
although there are lots of 'how tos' in it.
I've tried to put all the job changes we're experiencing into some sort
of
context and I've looked at some of the underlying principles for the
whole
business of job search. I've also woven in some of the experiences of
people
who were brave enough to face the cameras for the You've got
the Job
series, and drawn on those too, and of people I've worked with over the
years;
their stories will no doubt resonate with many readers.
Finally, a word about work. In this book I have used the words job and work
synonymously, as we have nearly all done through
the industrial age. Western
economies are now emerging, say the experts, from that industrial era
into the
'information age', or the 'age of knowledge and services'. This new age
will mean more flexibility in how we earn our income - a 'job' is only
one way of
packaging an
amount of 'work' that needs doing. In the meantime, most of us still
think of job and work as more or less the same thing.
I trust you enjoy the read!
