Peter Breen

Peter Breen attended the Australian Constitutional Convention in Canberra in 1998 as a legal adviser on the republic debate. In 1999, he was elected as an independent member of the New South Wales Legislative Council on a platform of law reform. Before entering parliament, he worked as a senior adviser in Brisbane at the Electoral and Administrative Review Commission following the Fitzgerald inquiry into police and political corruption. He has written extensively about why Australia should have a statutory Bill of Rights. He retired from parliament in 2007 to concentrate on writing and practising as a solicitor. He works in defamation and media law and does pro bono work for convicts who claim to be wrongly convicted. His writing includes books about politics, religion and the law. He lives on the north coast of New South Wales between Byron Bay and Bellingen with his wife.
