Prioritise your sleep
by Dr John Tickell
Prioritising sleep and allowing your body to rest can stabilise your mood, energise you and fuel your resilience.
Here is a saying which we should all stop to think about: ‘Sleep is the nourisher in life’s feast’.
It makes perfect sense.
Sleep gives us the chance to rest and recover. It is so important for our immune system to function at full strength.
Prioritising sleep and allowing your body to rest can stabilise your mood, energise you and fuel your resilience.
Sleep studies over the past few decades have shown that both sleep quality and quantity has declined.
To optimise our health, manage weight and support immunity, getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most important things we can do.
When we sleep, our body produces proteins called cytokines which target infection and inflammation, creating a positive immune response.
Our body also produces T. cells during sleep—white blood cells which play a critical role in our body’s immune response to infectious diseases.
Consistency of high-quality sleep is critical and there are quite a few things we can do to ensure we get enough quality sleep:
- Get enough bright light during the day and reduce blue light at night.
- Reduce your caffeine intake. Don't have too much and stick to a routine.
- Avoid alcohol before bedtime.
- Sleep in a cool environment.
- Relax and exercise.
It’s all in the ACE Plan.
