A prodigal pilgrim travels on a pilgrimage to Lourdes in France, known around the world for the miracles associated with its Marian healing shrine. Then he travels to Fatima in Portugal where the Marian appearances are reportedly said to include prophecies of the conversion of Russia and world peace. Finally, the pilgrim visits Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina – his favourite healing shrine – where Mary is said to be giving signs and promises of her triumph over evil.
Along the way, the author examines the phenomena of the apparitions and reports his observations in a series of letters to the Pope. While the Pope permits pilgrimages to Medjugorje, there is no official approval of the shrine as “worthy of belief as private revelation”. Speaking as a prodigal pilgrim, the author seeks renewal of his faith, while imploring the Pope to approve the shrine. Without Church approval, the prophecies and promises of Medjugorje are too easily dismissed as mass hysteria, delusion or some form of magic. Mary reportedly says that the ten secrets she is entrusting to the visionaries at Medjugorje involve events on earth which will be revealed three days in advance of them taking place…
This is the Letters to the Pope, a deeply spiritual memoir of a practicing Catholic as he grapples with the questions around the Marian apparitions and the broader question of faith.
A timely book following the death of Pope Francis and the introduction of Pope Leo XIV.
